The Dutch opera stage director / set designer Michiel Dijkema studied classical piano at the Sweelinck Conservatory Amsterdam with Danièle Dechenne and at the Utrecht School of Arts with Alexander Warenberg and Alwin Bär. Subsequently he studied opera stage directing at the Academy of Music “Hanns Eisler” Berlin. He was active as a song accompanist and studied interpretation of song with Thom Bollen in Utrecht and with Wolfram Rieger in Berlin.

During his study Michiel Dijkema staged student productions in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Berlin. Since 2005 he directed / designed Pelléas et Mélisande by Debussy and Orfeo ed Euridice by Gluck for the Dutch National Touring Opera (Nationale Reisopera), Carmen by Bizet for the German Landestheater Eisenach and Staatstheater Meiningen, Ascanio in Alba by Mozart for the ArtEZ School of Arts, Egmont by Beethoven / Goethe for the Gergiev Festival Rotterdam, La Cenerentola by Rossini for the Estonian National Opera Tallinn, in France Berlin-Broadway for Les Dominicains de Haute-Alsace, in Sweden L'Orfeo by Monteverdi for Drottningholms Slottsteater Stockholm, Pierrot Lunaire by Schönberg for the Gergiev Festival Rotterdam, Cabaret by Kander for the Landestheater Mecklenburg, Die Fledermaus by Strauss for the Landestheater Eisenach, Der Vampyr by Marschner for the Grachtenfestival Amsterdam, La Périchole by Offenbach for the State Operetta Dresden, Die Fledermaus by Strauss for the Novaya Opera Moscow, Il Turco in Italia by Rossini for the Oper Leipzig, Die Zauberflöte by Mozart for the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen, La Cenerentola by Rossini for the Dutch National Touring Opera (Nationale Reisopera), Die Fledermaus by Strauss for the Estonian National Opera Tallinn, Hänsel und Gretel for the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen, Il Barbiere di Siviglia for the Staatstheater Wiesbaden, La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein by Offenbach for the State Operetta Dresden, Tosca by Puccini for the Oper Leipzig and Hamlet by Ambroise Thomas for the Croatian National Opera Zagreb.

Michiel Dijkema won several international opera directing prizes: the second European Opera-directing Prize 2005, the first Peter-Konwitschny-Nachwuchsregiepreis for his concept of Carmen (Landestheater Eisenach) and in 2007 the Eesti Teatrikunsti Muusikalavastuste Award for his production of La Cenerentola (Estonian National Opera). This award is the most important Estonian music-theatre prize. On 8 June 2011 the set design of Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Staatstheater Wiesbaden) won the first Wizard-Award 2011 in Berlin.

Among his future engagements are productions for the Staatsoper Hannover, for the Staatstheater Darmstadt, for the Staatstheater Wiesbaden, for the Theater an der Wien and for the Oper Leipzig.

Michiel Dijkema lives in Amsterdam. He rode on his bicycle from Amsterdam to Rome, Santiago de Compostella, Venice, Vienna, London, Barcelona, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and other destinations.
