Ideas which amaze and enchant the audience and yet create an harmonic unity of staging and technique.” Altogether twenty-seven productions were submitted. Nine productions were selected by the expert jury for the final round, among others the Bayerische Staatsoper München, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Bregenzer Festspiele, the Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden and the Ruhrtriennale 2011. The jury: “In an outstanding manner, the production by director and set designer Michiel Dijkema from the Netherlands embodies the theatrical understanding between the audience and the performers, as well as the supporting technical wizardry, and absolutely deserved to be awarded the first prize.”

6 May 2011

FAZ: „A treasure trove of fresh metaphors.“ [...] „The young stage director Michiel Dijkema is a discovery.“ [...] „An ecstatic applause by the première audience. Entry in the fictive list of theatre tips.“ Wiesbadener Kurier: „go see and hear it“ Frankfurter Rundschau: „You don’t need to be a clairvoyant to see, that this Barber will be the driving force of the year. Rossinis comedy classic at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden has everything
, a hit production needs: tempo and colour, humour and class.“

3 November 2010

Last Sunday the première of Hänsel and Gretel at the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen was received with great enthusiasm by audience and press. Der Opernfreund: “I have to report something marvellous: It still exists, the imaginative, non-kitschy, yet colourful, intelligent, precise and contemporary Hänsel und Gretel production. Exciting, witty and not without double meaning”. Der Westen: “Dijkema proves, that it is possible to tell a fairy-tale fantasy as a story of today, coherently and with lightness. The gingerbread house [...] hides a fantastic high-tech-shredder-mixing-kneading-backing-machine, a masterpiece of stage design”. Ruhrnachrichten: “Dijkema picks up the spectator from the here and now, which surrounds him with its trivialities, but astonishingly enough, he succeeds to present the essence of the fairy-tale and the music undamaged: the evil which surrounds us, is recognized and completely exposed – and miracles are taken seriously as rarely seen.”

28 October 2010
In November the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen starts the project „HÖR.OPER“. The project makes it possible for blind and visually handicapped persons to enjoy an opera performance. During several Hänsel und Gretel performances the events on stage will be explained and commented with the help audio description. A total of 36 audio seats will be available.

Last Saturday the premiere of La Cenerentola by the Dutch National Touring Opera (Nationale Reisopera) was received with enormous enthusiasm and standing ovations. De Volkskrant: “Dijkemas Rossini production shows that humour didn’t stand still since 1817. [...] This Rossini by the Reisopera mixes the serious with the absurd”. De Telegraaf: “The première of this imaginative story got loud applause in the sold out Muziekkwartier Enschede. The Reisopera presents a production, which is as beautiful as entertaining.” NRC Handelsblad: “An opera by Rossini should be sparkling, playful and full of mockery, as La Cenerentola by the Nationale Reisopera is. In the vibrating, sometimes surprising staging by Michiel Dijkema, this stylish Cinderella evokes memories of the legendary and brilliant productions of Il Barbiere di Siviglia and L’ Italiana in Algeri by Dario Fo”. During the next four weeks this production will performed in twelve theatres in the Netherlands.

20 December 2009

Yesterday the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen was successfully reopened with the premiere of Die Zauberflöte. Ruhr Nachrichten: “With Mozarts Zauberflöte the Musiktheater im Revier had its enthusiastically applauded reopening. And the production became truly a succession of highlights. [...] Everything is to the point, the costumes full of contrast, the brave interpretation of initiation rituals, the complex of humour and drama, of lightness and profoundness. Everyone dedicates oneself to the performance with great talent, with enormous enthusiasm and with heart and soul.” Der Westen: “The Musiktheater im Revier has many reasons to celebrate its fiftieth birthday. With the new production of Die Zauberflöte it has an additional good reason. The premiere audience might even have experienced the most beautiful Mozart production the theatres in the region momentarily have to offer.” and “brilliant jokes of the magic fairy tale teller Dijkema”. Deutschlandradio Kultur: “The theatre shows a path to self-knowledge. Dijkemas rich, clever, highly imaginative, funny and existentially serious staging is a respectful gesture to the theatre, but it also demands a lot of the theatre. What more can you wish for as inauguration of the theatre on the occasion of its fiftieth birthday and its reopening.”

9 November 2009
The premiere of Il Turco in Italia (Oper Leipzig) last Saturday was received with enormous enthousiasm, long ovations and loud bravos for the artistic team (click here for a video trailer). The Leipziger Volkszeitung: “The Turco at the Oper Leipzig is great fun. [...] An incredibly comical production, which without any doubt will be a box office hit. The jubilation after the premiere made this very clear.” The Mitteldeutsche Zeitung: “Go see it!” and “The audience received the première with pure jubilation.” Bild: “Michiel Dijkema and Claudia Damm were flooded with overwhelming jubilation: their Rossini is fantastic and the sensational libretto-machine obviously a gift to mankind. Il Turco in Italia is an opera persiflage, which is pulled off with bravura: intelligent, very funny – with touching moments.”
